Ghouls and Gourds at Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

Birch as a wolf

Thank you J and J for this costume!
I can’t imagine why we have never been to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens’ in any of the years we have lived here. All I can say, is we will never miss it again. What a creative way to celebrate Halloween in a natural setting without any of the crass commercialism of Halloween. This party is all about performance art, costumes, music and imagination. It is truly lovely. The day culminated in the raucous parade with puppets, drummers and totally thrilled children. There were plenty of crafts to make: egg shakers filled with seeds, funky bug masks and leaf rubbings. There were 2 bands going at all times (though between you and me- I think they need a new bluegrass band next time and to lower the sound of the main band- the speakers blew all of our ears out). The food is always good at the BBG (and fairly priced for a museum environment)- so that kept the wild creatures at bay. Most exciting to Birch was trying out a large puppet from the BBG puppet posse. He tried on this wolf since, as of late, he is obsessed with Peter and the Wolf. In order to make him take it off, I had to promise him we would make our own wolf costume this week. Eegads! The costumes in general were creative- and one family we just met even shared their extra one with us so that Willow could look festive. (She’s the chick pictured here). Definitely not a party to miss next year.
